About me

As you will imagine, things never stood still at the BBC. Our team helped leaders to remain resilient while adapting constantly to find new ways to give value to all audiences.

I was closely involved in pan-BBC change projects and worked with the Executive Board as a facilitator to bring alive the BBC’s strategic vision. We delivered our leadership programmes commercially to international markets, securing repeat business around the world,

I’m inspired by enabling leaders and their teams to do their best work. But I started out wanting to be a radio presenter after winning a BBC Schools competition aged 15 and appearing on Radio 4. At 16 had my own hospital radio programme and as a 19 year old Law student at Queens’ College in Cambridge, I presented and produced programmes for BBC Radio Cambridgeshire before joining the station after graduating. After 4 wonderful years as a radio presenter/producer and TV reporter, I took my first steps into management. That profound change, from focusing mainly on myself to enabling others to grow, gave me a powerful ‘lightbulb moment’. I enjoy empowering leaders to deliver sustained high performance through bringing out the potential in people. This blog is a personal account of my time at the BBC and you can read about the next steps in my leadership career here. It’s a story of running local radio stations, executive roles in the BBC East and West regions and then in learning and development. It includes winning a High Court case, giving evidence to a select committee and leading a ground-breaking project for emerging leaders from Israel and Gaza. Outside the BBC, I chaired the Standards Board for Somerset. For the past 6 years, I’ve been privileged to serve in a non-executive role on the board at Shaftesbury Group UK.

I have an MA in Law and Philosophy from Cambridge University and an MBA. I’m an accredited coach with the Association for Coaching and a Certified Performance Consultant with the Learning and Performance Institute. I’m an experienced facilitator, speaker and host, Most important of all, I’ve been married to Serena, an NHS nurse for more than 33 years and together we have three adult sons. I enjoy walking, running, remaining ever hopeful about Bristol City Football Club, playing the organ at our local Methodist Church and singing in the Wells Cathedral Oratorio. We live in a small, but perfectly formed city in the shadow of the Mendip Hills, down the road from the Glastonbury Festival site.
